Contaminated-water cleanup

What Category 3 water means

Category 3 describes grossly contaminated water that can carry harmful microorganisms or other contaminants. A toilet overflow containing waste, a sewer backup and outdoor floodwater are situations that need this level of caution. Water does not have to look dark or smell strongly to be a concern. Tell us where it came from, which rooms it reached and whether the source is still active when you call. That information helps establish a safe starting point without asking you to investigate the water yourself.

A small affected area can still require careful handling. Water can pass under flooring, behind baseboards and into adjoining wall materials. The visible puddle alone does not establish the cleanup boundary. Our focus is controlling the affected area, identifying wet materials and documenting what needs mitigation before the property moves toward repairs.

What to expect

First steps while you arrange help

Keep people and pets away from the affected rooms. Avoid walking through sewage or floodwater, handling wet belongings or carrying contaminated items into clean spaces. Close off access if you can do so from a dry, safe position. Do not run household fans over the water or contaminated materials, and do not attempt cleanup with a household vacuum. Stay away from electrical outlets, appliances and panels near water. If you cannot reach a shutoff safely, leave it alone and describe the hazard when you call.

Stop using fixtures that could add water to an active sewer backup. A plumber should identify and correct the drain or sewer-line problem. Do not mix cleaning chemicals or pour products into standing water. Take photographs from a safe location if possible, but do not enter an affected room just to collect evidence. If anyone has contact with contaminated water or feels unwell afterward, seek appropriate medical advice.

What to expect

Containment, extraction and affected-material removal

24 Hr FloodMasters provides 24/7 sewage cleanup and emergency mitigation in Temple and Central Texas. We assess the water source, access and affected materials before planning containment and extraction. Keeping contaminated work separate from clean areas helps limit tracking through the property. Extraction removes the standing water, but the work does not end when the floor looks dry. We also consider the materials the water reached and the moisture that remains out of sight.

Porous materials contaminated by sewage or floodwater may need removal because surface cleaning cannot reliably reach what they absorbed. Carpet padding, insulation and affected drywall are examples. We explain the affected areas and document removal as part of mitigation. Not every nearby item automatically needs disposal; the source, contact and material matter. Photograph belongings before disposal when safe, and ask your insurer what evidence it requires. Do not keep contaminated materials indoors solely to wait for an adjuster.

What to expect

Cleaning and structural drying

After extraction and necessary material removal, accessible remaining surfaces need cleaning appropriate to the contamination. Drying follows the cleanup plan rather than substituting for it. Equipment placement and moisture readings help track the remaining moisture in accessible structural materials. A dry-looking surface is not enough to establish that the assembly behind it is ready for repair. We document the affected areas and drying progress so the next professional can understand the mitigation work.

Odor alone is not a completion test. Equally, covering a stain or replacing trim before underlying materials are dry can conceal an unresolved problem. If mold is suspected, tell us about visible growth or a persistent musty smell so that concern can be assessed. Our role is mitigation and stabilization. Rebuilding walls, installing finishes and other reconstruction remain a separate stage.

What to expect

Insurance documentation and the plumbing handoff

Your insurer may ask when you discovered the loss, what appeared to cause it, which rooms and belongings were affected, and what steps prevented further damage. Keep photographs, a simple timeline, mitigation records and receipts together. If a plumber investigates the backup, retain that report too. Coverage depends on the policy and the cause, including whether sewer-backup coverage applies. We provide mitigation documentation, but your insurer decides coverage and payment.

A cleanup contractor and a plumber have different jobs. We address contaminated water and affected building materials; a plumber handles the failed pipe, blocked drain or sewer-line repair. Correcting the source is essential before normal use resumes. When you call, explain whether a plumber has attended and whether wastewater is still entering. You do not need a diagnosis before requesting help, just an honest description of what you can safely observe.

Frequently asked questions

Sewage and Category 3 cleanup, answered.

Is every toilet overflow Category 3 water?

An overflow containing sewage or human waste needs contaminated-water precautions. Do not decide from appearance alone. Describe the source and affected areas when you call, and keep people and pets away while the situation is assessed.

Can I dry sewage water with household fans?

No. Keep household fans off contaminated water and materials. Drying alone does not remove contamination. The affected area needs assessment, controlled extraction, necessary material removal and cleaning before an appropriate drying plan.

Will all wet materials have to be removed?

The decision depends on contamination, contact and the material. Porous materials such as sewage-contaminated drywall, insulation and carpet padding may need removal. Accessible remaining materials are assessed for cleaning and drying rather than automatically discarded.

Does insurance cover a sewer backup?

Coverage depends on your policy, the cause and any sewer-backup endorsement. Contact your insurer, keep photographs and receipts, and ask what documentation it needs. Mitigation records support the claim but do not guarantee coverage.

Do you repair the sewer line or rebuild the room?

No. Our work is emergency mitigation, including containment, extraction, affected-material removal, cleaning, drying and documentation. A plumber handles sewer-line or drain repair, and reconstruction belongs with the appropriate repair contractor.
